ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Dr. Justin Bunting currently serves as Assistant Professor of Percussion at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. His performance engagements include PASIC, the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, the Toronto Summer Music Academy and Festival, and the Great American Brass Band Festival. As an orchestral musician, Justin has performed with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, Winston-Salem Symphony, and the Salisbury Symphony. He currently performs with his wife, Cassie, as Blue Line Duo. Active in PAS, Dr. Bunting currently serves on the World Percussion Committee and is a reviewer for Percussive Notes. In addition to performing at PASIC, he has appeared PAS Days of Percussion in Armenia, Colombia as well as North Carolina, Tennessee, and Ohio. He is an artist/endorser for Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth sticks and mallets, Grover Pro Percussion, and is a member of the D’Addario/Evans Education Collective.

ABOUT THE RESEARCH LIGHTNING SESSION: Shifting Perception in Steve Reich’s Music for Pieces of Wood

My research focuses on Reich’s use of beat-class transposition and how it causes unique perceptual issues for the listener and performer in his piece, “Music for Pieces of Wood.” I intend to present my paper and findings through an oral presentation.
