Dr. Julie Strom
Dr. Julie Strom is in her second year as Assistant Professor of Percussion at the University of Northern Colorado where she works to expand her passion of crossing “classical” tradition with other forms of music, art, theater and dance. With an ease of playing, and a casual yet consistent flair, she is known for her versatility, often preaching in favor of generalizing over specializing.
Strom is a two-time recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship (Munich, Germany) and has studied, taught, performed and recorded internationally as an orchestral and chamber musician, educator, and composer. Prior to her international work at the Hochschule für Musik, she studied at the Manhattan School of Music with Christopher Lamb, Duncan Patton, Steve Schick, and frame drummer Glen Velez.
Strom has performed in an on-stage Broadway role and since 2015, plays regularly with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra where she also serves administratively as Assistant Personnel Manager.
About the Session
Freelancing, Networking, and Just Being Chill
You’ve got a degree in performance, so now what? You’re a musician, right? It’s what you set out to do. Now that you can play, how do you REALLY land gigs? How do you connect with people in the real world, outside of music school? How do you write a resume? Will all of that 4-mallet marimba practice finally pay off?! Truth is, most students never have a single class on networking or landing the post-college gigs. We’ll talk about the fear of being out of school, the hurdles of practicing, work-life balance, being different to discover your own niche, building long-lasting connections, and freelancing your way to a satisfying musical career.
