About the Performance Piece

Mark Applebaum’s Gone Dog, Gone! performed by Fisher/Lau Project

Gone, Dog. Gone! by Mark Applebaum showcases two percussionists sharing one set of found sounds while performing a series of hand gestures. In the final section of the piece, the performers shout the words of the title (“Gone, Dog. Gone!”) at the beginning of each phrase. This vocal addition connects to the percussive sounds and hand gestures.

Composed in 2012, Gone, Dog. Gone! is a companion piece to Applebaum’s Aphasia, and Go, Dog. Go! Applebaum adapts short back-to-back snippets of rhythms from various pop and rock songs from the the 80s and 90s (including Day Tripper by The Beatles, Wannabe by The Spice Girls, The Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin and Funkytown by Lipps Inc). Although this work does not include lyrics, Applebaum is inspired by the specific pop and rock songs, and the feel of those songs is an underlying current throughout.
